News from and for Our Loyal Supporters - April 2008In This IssueCampaign Is Unveiled to New AudiencesWord of Opportunity for a Lifetime: A Campaign for the Future of Worcester State College is spreading among our alumni and friends. At an elegant New York Alumni Chapter luncheon this week, we are thrilled to unveil plans to raise $1 million to name the soon-to-be renovated Administration Building after the late Dr. Helen Shaughnessy. In March, the recent presentation of the campaign at our Florida Alumni Chapter Events was well-received (see story below). This bodes well for the Opportunity for a Lifetime campaign, as we are more than one-third of the way toward reaching our $10 million goal. Members of the three Campaign Committees will review our plan for the next 10 months on Thursday, June 12th. Note on your calendar that on May 5th, the new Opportunity for a Lifetime campaign website will launch. David and Linda Bedard | Campaign Scholarship Committee Chair Makes Leadership GiftThe long relationship David Bedard and his wife, Linda, have had with Worcester State College became even stronger recently with the naming of the College as a charitable beneficiary of their charitable remainder trust (CRT). Their CRT makes WSC the charitable beneficiary of at least $75,000 when it matures. President Janelle C. Ashley said, "We deeply appreciate Dave's dedication and Linda's support. Be it as an alumnus, a Foundation Board member, member of this campaign's executive committee, or mentor to our students, Dave's involvement makes a tremendous difference for our students." "We thought this would be a wonderful opportunity to engage area biotech leaders in understanding and discussing the ambitious plans of Worcester State to strengthen and expand its cutting edge programs in science and technology." -- Ronald Chand
| Area Biotech Leaders Support WSC's Green Chemistry PlansArea biotech and manufacturing leaders had a unique opportunity to learn about WSC's "green chemistry" initiative at the home of Ronald and Alina Chand in Paxton on March 20th. Started by Fulbright Scholar and Associate Professor of Chemistry Margaret Kerr, PhD., this new Chemistry Department program was received enthusiastically by the audience. Warner Fletcher, who serves on several area foundations, sees a vital role for WSC. "Although most of the area large manufacturing corporations have left Worcester, it is important that our community take advantage of new opportunities," he said. "Certainly, our higher educational institutions provide a stable foundation for our continued growth. Worcester State students are key because they come from this area and stay here after graduation." Over 30 students, faculty members, alumni and area industry representatives attended the event.
